Rosneft Supports Scientists’ Study of Musk Ox Population in Taymyr

Scientists from the Siberian Federal University, supported by RN-Vankor (operator of Rosneft’s flagship Vostok oil project), conducted a comprehensive survey of musk ox numbers in the western part of the Taymyr. The research is conducted as part of the enterprise’s grant programme.
Preserving the environment for future generations is an integral part of Rosneft’s corporate culture. The Company’s subsidiaries implement comprehensive programmes for the conservation and restoration of natural resources, including the use of modern technology.
Researchers used air and water transport to carry out the survey. The total length of all the routes was over 12,000 kilometres, including over 2,800 kilometres of water expeditions along the Pyasina River, its tributaries and Lake Pyasino.
The scientists received up-to-date data on the number, sex-age structure and distribution of the musk ox population in the Western Taymyr. All animal sightings and tracks were recorded using photography, video equipment, GPS recorders and by marking coordinates on a map base. The scientists also interviewed local people, including fishermen and hunters, about musk ox sightings.
On the right bank of the Pyasina River, near the mouth of the Khanchecha River, scientists observed for the first time a group of musk oxen: an adult male and female, a yearling bull and two calves born this year. The data show successful breeding of mammals in Western Taymyr. In addition, scientists say it is highly likely that the gradual dispersal of musk oxen is taking place in the Western Taymyr.
Scientists from the Siberian Federal University will develop recommendations and measures for the conservation and further rational use of this biological resource in Taymyr as a whole. As a reminder, the musk ox population of Taymyr was revived by Soviet scientists in a unique project in 1974. By the mid-1990s there were about 1,000 musk oxen on the peninsula, and by the early 2000s there were more than 4,000.

Environmental and social projects of practical importance to Taymyr and its people are implemented under the RN-Vankor grant programme. This year, with the support of the oil workers, projects are being carried out to assess the status of the main commercial fish populations in the Taymyr’s waters using rapid analysis technologies, and to produce a textbook «Northern Reindeer of the Taymyr».
In 2023, the winners of the grant competition were projects to assess the state of aquatic biological resources in the Yenisei Gulf of the Kara Sea, to analyse the number and distribution of goose-like birds in Western Taymyr, and to assess the state and dynamics of vegetation cover in Western Taymyr using remote sensing data.
